I grew up in a family of eight where music was the only hobby allowed. No pop music, just Bach, Russian Orthodox chants, and Taizé hymns filling the house. I often wished for a “normal” childhood with Top 40 hits, but now I see how those sounds shaped how I hear and create. 
My artist name, Rhodé Vree, is a tribute to my mom and the women in my family. Vree is her last name and it means peace, protection, and freedom from conflict. She passed away in 2020, and her death is what gave me the courage to start singing. 
My debut single, “Mond Vol Moed” (Mouth Full of Courage), is about finding softness in a hard world, and daring to break free when you feel caged. It's written in Dutch and filmed on 16mm by Maarten de Bruijne. The song was released on July 27th, my mother's birthday.
